Prep roundup (March 12): North Oconee tennis remains undefeated & more

BOGART | North Oconee swept at every position Friday to defeat Oconee County 5-0 and remain undefeated at 6-0.

In singles, Elijah Bullock defeated Connor McCarthy 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 1, Walker Towns beat Gabriel Young 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 and John Knight bested Clay Malcom 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Henri Johnson and Christopher Brandon defeated Landen Benson and Andrew Davis 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, and the No. 2 team of Doster Chastain and Quint Breedlove downed Malachy Mejias and Jake Boran 6-2, 7-6 (3).

The Titans will host Monroe Area on Tuesday. Oconee County will play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson County.

APALACHEE 4, LOGANVILLE 1: At Bethlehem, the Wildcats improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 8-AAAAA with a victory over the visiting Red Devils.

In singles, Chandler Hagan won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, Eli Hagan won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Cristian Perez won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.

Apalachee’s No. 1 doubles team – Trey Hayes and Davis Hayes – clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The Wildcats will play at 4 p.m. Monday at Winder-Barrow and will host Gainesville on Tuesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

NORTH OCONEE 5, OCONEE COUNTY 0: At Bogart, the Titans improved to 6-1 with a sweep of the Warriors. 

In singles, Ansley Hardeman defeated Hannah Boran 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Kate Dukes won over Julia Hardell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 and Amanda Bounds bested Miranda Gomez 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 3.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Sydney Yang and Charlotte Hudson downed Sarah Catherine Pennell 6-2, 7-6, 7-1, and the No. 2 team of Gemma Kummerer and Megan Reid defeated Alexis Anderson and Lexi Houston 7-5, 6-1.

North Oconee will host Monroe Area on Tuesday. Oconee County will play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson County.

BASEBALL

ATHENS CHRISTIAN 10, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 0 (five innings): At Athens Academy, Andrew Hayes hurled a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Eagles won their Region 8-A opener.

Athens Christian had eight hits and was led by Zack Gamber (two hits, including a two-run home run, four runs, four RBIs), Emory Vaughn (two hits), Terrell Maddox (two runs) and Dewitt Wood (three walks, two runs).

The Eagles (4-4, 1-0) will play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Academy.

NORTH OCONEE 7, CHESTATEE 1: At Bogart, Josh Farmer threw nine strikeouts as the Titans defeated Chestatee in their Region 8-AAAA opener.

Tanner Green paced the offense with a two-run home run, while Hunter Jordan had a two-RBI hit and Evan Meade added an RBI.

North Oconee (4-5, 1-0) will play at 5:55 p.m. Monday at Chestatee.

JACKSON COUNY SWEEPS: At Jefferson, Jackson County posted a doubleheader victory over Oconee County, winning the opener 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning and taking the nightcap 4-3 when Chris Griggs scored on a Joel Ellis single, again in the seventh inning.

Griggs also had a two-run double to tie the second game at 3-3. Ellis and Tyler Sartain drove in runs in the first agme, which Zane Corley earned the pitching victory by working 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Jackson County, which defeated the Warriors in eight innings on Tuesday and runs its record to 6-3-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 8-AAA, will host Hart County at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday. Oconee County (3-6, 0-3) will host Jefferson at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday.

WINDER-BARROW 12, CEDAR SHOALS 1 (six innings): At Winder, Will Hardigree and Casey Thurmond teamed up to limit Cedar Shoals to four hits; Hardigree struck out five and Thurmond fanned six Jaguars batters.

The Bulldoggs recorded 11 hits and were led by Pat Demarco (two doubles, four RBIs), Lance Sykes (two hits, two RBIs) and Trend Maddox (three hits, one run, two RBIs).

Winder-Barrow (7-2, 3-0 in Region 8-AAAAA) and Cedar Shoals (0-9, 0-5) will play at 5:55 p.m. Monday in Athens.

FLOWERY BRANCH 5, CLARKE CENTRAL 0: At Flowery Branch, the Gladiators fell to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Clarke Central hosts Flowery Branch at 5:55 p.m. Monday.

NORTH HALL 1, MADISON COUNTY 0 (nine innings): At Danielsville, North Hall managed only four hits but got the game’s only run in the top of the ninth inning as Madison County lost for the first time.

The Red Raiders (9-1, 0-1 in Region 8-AAAA) had six hits and were led by Dylan Gentry, who recorded two hits.

Madison County will play at 5:55 p.m. Monday at North Hall.

WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN 7, COVINGTON ACADEMY 3: At Watkinsville, the Lions won their first region game of the season as C.J. Smith pitched four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and Harrison Ricketts came on in relief with six strikeouts.

Smith and Ricketts were also potent at the plate, with Smith producing three hits and an RBI and Ricketts adding two hits (including a home run) and two RBIs.

Westminster Christian (2-2, 1-0) will play Friday at Nathanael Greene Academy in Siloam.

HEBRON CHRISTIAN 2, COMMERCE 0: At Commerce, Trey Parr pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with four strikeouts, but the Tigers managed but one hit in their Region 8-A opener.

Matthew Flint had the only hit for Commerce (6-2, 0-1), which plays at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hebron Christian.

BOYS SOCCER

CLARKE CENTRAL 5, LEE COUNTY 2: At Jekyll Island, the Gladiators departed the Golden Isles with a 2-0 record as four different players scored against Lee County.

Clarke Central (6-1) was led by Scholl Wright (who scored two goals), Cole Wilson, Luis Diaz and Elias Orozco.

Wilson and Wright recorded two assists each.

The Gladiators will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Discovery.

APALACHEE 4, SALEM 1: At Conyers, Antonio Ortiz scored a pair of goals to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Jorge Centellas and Oscar Aguado scored Apalachee’s other goals.

The Wildcats will host Gainesville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

WHITE COUNTY 2, NORTH OCONEE 1: At Cleveland, White County tallied two unanswered goals to defeat North Oconee in Region 8-AAAA play.

The Titans’ goal came in the first half from Logan Jack off an assist from Mark Perry.

North Oconee (6-3, 1-1) was scheduled to play at Stephens County on Saturday and will host Madison County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

LEE COUNTY 2, CLARKE CENTRAL 0: At Jekyll Island, the Gladiators fell to Lee County, despite six saves from keeper Paulina Hafer.

Clarke Central (3-3-2) will play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Discovery.

GAINESVILLE 8, WINDER-BARROW 0: At Winder, the Red Elephants blanked the Bulldoggs in Region 8-AAAAA play.

Winder-Barrow (5-2-1, 2-1) will host Lanier at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SAVANNAH ARTS 2, OCONEE COUNTY 1: At Savannah, Carmen Pavao scored the Warriors’ only goal against the Panthers, who won the game on a penalty kick with one second left on the clock.

Oconee County (2-3-1) will host East Jackson at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BASEBALL

WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN 11, MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 7: At Bogart, Hollan Johnson, Jake Grantham and Luke Bartel combined for 13 strikeouts as Westminster Christian won its first game of the season.

Johnmark Daniel led the Lions offense with two hits and an RBI. Xander Haymore added two hits and two RBIs.

Westminster Christian was set to face Covington Academy on Friday.

WINDER-BARROW 2, PEACHTREE RIDGE 1: At Winder, Daniel Buice earned the pitching victory and helped his own cause on offense as the Bulldoggs defeated visiting Peachtree Ridge.

Buice pitched five innings, giving up one hit and striking out two batters in just 42 pitches. He also had two hits and his courtesy runner, Sam Darling, scored twice, including the eventual game-winner on a hit by Skylar Murphy.

The Bulldoggs (7-2) will play at 5:55 p.m. Monday at Cedar Shoals.

MONTICELLO 5, OGLETHORPE COUNTY 0: At Monticello, Blake LaCount extended his hitting streak to nine games, but the Patriots managed but three hits against the Purple Hurricanes.

Matt Wells and Dylan Smith recorded Oglethorpe County’s other hits.

The Patriots (3-6) will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Greene County.

BOYS GOLF

OCONEE COUNTY 160, PRINCE AVENUE CHRISTIAN 161: At Athens Country Club, Prince Avenue Christian’s Will Kahlstorf was low medalist with a 35, but Oconee County captured the narrow victory.

The Warriors were led by Dustin DeMerssenan, who carded a 39.

For the Wolverines, Bradley Lastinger added a 40 and Peyton Shedd contributed at 41.

Prince Avenue will face Athens Christian on Tuesday at Jennings Mill Country Club.

BOYS SOCCER

CLARKE CENTRAL 3, MT. PARAN CHRISTIAN 0: At Jekyll Island, Cole Wilson had two goals and an assist as the Gladiators improved to 5-1.

Luis Diaz scored Clarke Central’s other goal and Scholl Wright added an assist.

The Gladiators will host Lanier at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 25.

GATEWOOD 4, WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN 3: At Watkinsville, the Lions dropped their first game of the season, despite two goals by Jack Dobson.

Luke Phillips added a goal and an assist for Westminster Christian, which hosts Friendship Christian on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

CLARKE CENTRAL 1, MT. PARAN CHRISTIAN 1: At Jekyll Island, Saidee Perno scored Clarke Central’s only goal off an assist from Sofia Lopez.

The Gladiators (3-2-2) will play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Discovery

WESTMINTER CHRISTIAN 3, GATEWOOD 0: At Watkinsville, Hadley Kirsche, Rachel Snyder and Faith Nesbit all scored as the Lions improved to 2-0.

Emma Atchley recorded an assist and freshman Kinley Phillips posted the shutout in goal.

Westminster Christian will host Friendship Christian on Tuesday.

BOYS TENNIS

OCONEE COUNTY 5, MORGAN COUNTY 0: At Watkinsville, the Warriors swept all positions to post a Region 8-AAA victory Morgan County.

In singles, Connor McCarthy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Gabriel Young won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 and Clay Malcom won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
