Five-star quarterback commitment Jacob Eason from Lake Stevens, Wash., signed his financial aid papers with Georgia last month so coach Mark Richt is permitted under NCAA rules to comment on him. He did Wednesday. “We don’t want to make too big of a deal about anybody,” he said. “We’re glad that he’s committed to Georgia. We think he’s a fine player and a really fine person and we’re looking forward to getting him here in January.” Richt declined to talk about his skill-set. “No. We wouldn’t have offered him if we didn’t think he was really good.” Eason was 14-of-14 for 294 yards and three touchdowns in a win Friday night. “I read something about that,” Richt said. “That’s good. Keep it going, man. Keep it going.”
… A day after Georgia running back Nick Chubb said he never saw Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier on his final recruiting visit to South Carolina before committing to Georgia, Spurrier said he was out of town receiving an award in Florida. “I was out of town when he came,” Spurrier said. “Sometimes I’m in town, sometimes I’m out. Yeah, I think he visited when I was out.” Spurrier said he thought Chubb was headed to Georgia anyway.
… Inside linebacker Reggie Carter didn’t practice Wednesday due to a recurring shoulder injury he has, Richt said. “It comes and goes,” he said.
... Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said he got a call from Spurrier, his coach at Florida in the 1990s, this summer after he had seen a show on TV about his coaching father, Marty. “It will be fun to compete with him and against him on Saturday night,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s the most competitive person I think I’ve ever met. ...I look forward to seeing him and then hopefully beating him.”
