Dogs and cats are now living together in Athens-Clarke County — or, at least they’re in the same building — as a $620,000 county government project to bring all animal control operations into one facility moves forward.

The Animal Control Department’s cat shelter was moved earlier this week from its former location at 150 Buddy Christian Way in the eastern end of the county to the main shelter nearby at 125 Buddy Christian Way. As a result of the move, the phone number for the cat shelter is now the main shelter phone number, (706) 613-3540.

The animal control expansion and renovation project was approved by Athens-Clarke County voters in a November 2010 referendum on continuing a 1 percent special-purpose local option sales tax. Money raised from the tax is funding a number of infrastructure improvement projects across the community.

For more information on the Animal Control Department, including an animal adoption application, go online to http://bit.ly/1SDamhY. The shelter is open to the public every day, except Wednesdays and holidays, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Animal Control Department provides a number of services to county residents, including adoption or reclaiming of impounded and surrendered dogs; enforcement of Athens-Clarke’s animal control ordinances; information regarding lost or found dogs; investigations of allegations of animal cruelty, public education on a variety of topics related to animals and public safety from dangerous or seriously sick animals and at-large dogs.
