No arrests have been made in the attack on a Jefferson man who reported he was waylaid, shot, and robbed a week ago in Barrow County when he was attacked on his motorcycle at an intersection, according to reports.
The 43-year-old victim reported the assault and robbery on the evening of April 22 to a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The exact location was not in the report but was determined to be on the outskirts of the city of Statham.
The man told the deputy that he was pistol whipped on the head, then shot with a small caliber weapon in his shoulder blade and in his left testicle.
The man said he wrestled with the robbers and was able to take the firearm from the men, but that the men escaped with $1,800 cash he was carrying, according to the report.
After his escape he drove to a friend’s house in Athens and this person, a slender young red-headed woman, took him to his mother’s home in Arcade, where an ambulance was called and he was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, according to the sheriff’s report.
The victim could not be reached for comment, but his mother told the OnlineAthens.com/Athens Banner-Herald on Thursday that her son is doing well and is out of the hospital.
The victim told the Jackson deputy he changed clothing prior to leaving for the hospital and the clothing he was wearing when attacked was in a washing machine. The deputy collected the clothing as evidence.
After learning the crime occurred in Barrow County, the Jackson County deputy contacted a sheriff’s deputy there and provided him with the wet clothing and information he collected.
The victim told deputies that his female friend would provide them with the handgun he pried away from one robber, but information was unavailable Friday on whether law enforcement has the gun.
